Casual and daily-rate payroll

Payroll for casual and daily-rate workers

PayrollMaster pays casual and daily-rate workers on the same platform as salaried staff. Attendance arrives by manual entry, QR, biometric or geofence; overtime is computed by weekday, rest-day and holiday rates; region and job-category minimum-wage floors are enforced; and sub-monthly earnings get sub-monthly PAYE with prorated relief.

The problem

Why casual pay is where payroll breaks

For employers who run large casual, seasonal or daily-rate teams.

  • The hours live on paper

A muster roll, a notebook, a supervisor’s memory. By the time it reaches payroll it has been transcribed at least once, and a transcription is a wage dispute waiting to happen.

  • The wage floor is not one number

Minimum wage moves by region and by job category. Apply the wrong floor to the right worker and you have underpaid — which stops being a payroll problem and becomes a labour-office one.

  • Sub-monthly pay gets taxed monthly

Somebody paid for nine days is not a monthly employee. Apply monthly relief to sub-monthly earnings and the PAYE comes out wrong — sometimes in the worker’s favour, sometimes in yours. Both are findings.

Casuals paid correctly and compliantly, on the same run as everyone else.

How it works

How does casual payroll work?

Four steps, from the gate to a compliant payslip.

  1. 1

    Capture the attendance

Hours come in by manual entry, QR code, biometric or geofence — whatever suits the gate, the field or the site. Hours are computed automatically rather than transcribed from a notebook.

  2. 2

    Hold the wage floor

Minimum-wage floors apply by region and job category, not as one national number. Anything below the applicable floor is flagged before you pay it, not after an inspection.

  3. 3

    Rate the hours

Overtime is computed by type — weekday, rest-day and public-holiday hours each pay at their own rate, across the whole crew, without anyone doing it by hand.

  4. 4

    Tax it correctly

Sub-monthly earnings get sub-monthly PAYE, with prorated relief and below-threshold exemption. Fixed-fee task workers get withholding tax — resident or non-resident — with the certificate issued automatically.

Questions

Casual & daily-rate teams: common questions

Does PayrollMaster handle casual and daily-rate workers?

Yes, and it is a genuine strength. Timesheet casuals and fixed-fee task workers run on the same platform as salaried staff, with attendance capture, overtime by type, region-specific minimum-wage enforcement and sub-monthly PAYE handled correctly.

How is attendance captured for casual workers?

Four ways: manual entry, QR code, biometric or geofence. Hours are computed from the capture rather than typed in later, so the payslip traces back to a record rather than to a notebook.

Does it enforce minimum wage?

Yes. Floors apply by region and job category, and anything below the applicable floor is flagged before the payroll is paid. That is the check a labour inspection makes, done before the money leaves.

Can casuals and salaried staff be on the same payroll run?

Yes. Casual, seasonal and permanent staff run together — one run, one set of statutory returns, one filing. You do not keep a second system for the people paid by the day.
